While NAPE’s public sector members were in the process of voting on tentative agreements, leadership of the St. John’s Board of Trade decided to publicly undermine the deal negotiated in good faith by NAPE and government.
And the executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council decided to join the fray in support of the Board of Trade.
While we have a responsibility to get the best deal for our members, we also have a vested interest in the province thriving and succeeding – both economically and socially.
To think that we would strike a deal that would jeopardize the future of our province is patently false, unnecessarily inflammatory, and fear-mongering at its worst.
We maintain that this agreement will have a positive economic and social impact on our province by providing much-needed stability. Thankfully, the provincial government sees it the same way.
Thirty thousand NAPE members and their families form a vital part of our province making contributions in just about every one of our communities. The last thing we would ever want is to hurt the place that, like you, we love so much. This is our home, too.
Since then, we have heard from many Board of Trade members – both big and small. What did they tell us? They weren’t consulted, and they are entirely opposed to what the Board’s leadership had to say. They know NAPE members are good for business.
NAPE members realize many local businesses are struggling in this difficult economy. And we can help. In fact, we expect much of the money NAPE members will receive from the severance payout (if the contract is accepted by our members) – some $250 million – will find its way into our local economy, providing a much-needed boost to businesses throughout the province.
And that’s how the #NAPEwelcome campaign was born.
Any business that welcomes the support of NAPE members can put a #NAPEwelcome decal on its front door or window, and post a picture of it on social media together with the name of their business and the hashtag #NAPEwelcome. We will post the name of that business to this website for all our members to see. NAPE has already mailed an invitation to participate to many members of the St. John’s Board of Trade.
We also asked NAPE members to take a selfie when they see a business with the decal and post it to social media with the hashtag #NAPEwelcome.
ALL businesses across Newfoundland and Labrador are invited to take part. You can request a decal here.
Online local businesses can take part too by posting the #NAPEwelcome logo on their websites and social media accounts. You can download the logo here.
Because it’s time for some positive thinking and positive action.
